Do you know the hashtag on Instagram #communityovercompetition? It is a great one. If you look around you will see it is often used by businesses and creatives who are open to collaborations. It is a way to support fellow business owners. It is a wonderful concept, however, I have found myself adding this hashtag to the bottom of my photos and then doing absolutely nothing about it.
In the past, I have allowed the fear of being too young to have my own business overwhelm my deep longing to connect with other creatives. I have hidden behind my Instagram, thinking that reaching out to people in the same field as me would be a sign of weakness. My tendency to become jealous of other people’s success would prevent me from being able to follow them or support them.
This year I knew it was time to put an end to this behavior. I know that I need a community of creatives and that there is a space for everyone at the table. So I made a little Instagram video and just said that I was looking to collaborate and connect with other creatives. It was scary and I got a deep pit in my stomach, worried that no one would respond and just laugh at my video. Thankfully, a few people responded and that is what flourished into this incredible styled shoot.
The wedding vendor community can feel very overwhelming, almost like a high school clique, but these girls give me hope that it doesn’t have to be like that if we choose to not let it be that way. Salmon Arm’s wedding industry is growing and I am SO here for it.
Big thank you to the wonderful ladies I worked with
